When it comes to making it look like elements from different sources are part of the same image in a video, a professional compositing software is what you need, rather than your run-of-the-mill lightweight video editor. A good solution is Natron, especially if you are on a budget. It delivers professional-level compositing tools at no cost and it can make your work smoother and more comfortable. With a myriad of editing tools and support for open source and commercial OpenFX plugins, this piece of software can definitely meet your demands, even on complex projects.

Installing Natron on a Windows-powered computer is not a difficult task. After creating an online account, you will have to go through a standard installation process, by following a wizard's instructions. There are no special tools or services you have to install, so you may run the software right away.

You may want to spend some time looking over the software's user interface or have a look over its documentation, because there are a lot of controls to know about. This, however, is not necessarily a bad thing, since you will have everything you need within your reach. Furthermore, Natron's node-based functionality allows you to connect your images and special effects with ease and it can also give you a clear picture on how your project is put together, regardless of its complexity.

From importing images and footage, to setting up special effects, you can do everything by creating nodes and connecting them with arrows. The software provides you with a large space where you can organize and connect your nodes and you can preview your project with a built-in player, located directly above the node editing area. You simply need to right click in the editing area and choose what type of node you want in a system of sub-menus.

A wide range of tweaks can be made to a selected node, on the right side of the user interface. Depending on what type of node you select, you will get different tools to work with. The software lets you manipulate color saturation, contrast, gamma, offsets, midtones and other visual characteristics. You can also resize images, crop and transform them, reduce noise, deinterlace and more. Also, Natron provides full support for chroma key compositing.

All the filters you apply and the changes you make are visible right away in the project's preview, thanks to Natron's multi-threaded rendering engine and multi-tasking capabilities. It lets you work with countless graphic formats and you can also extend its functionality through third-party plugins.

If you are looking for a professional-grade compositing solution, then Natron is exactly what you need.

Pros

Natron provides you with countless editing tools. It lets you work in a node-based environment, with countless graphic formats. Its functionality can be expanded through plugins.

Cons

Clicking and dragging arrows to connect nodes can be difficult in certain situations, because they are too small.
